Abstract

The present article describes the experience of the pilot implementation of the “Proyecto Transición a la Vida Adulta” (Transition to Adulthood Project), from here on TVA, of young people with intellectual disabilities (ID) who are about to graduate from special education. The project was conducted in 2018 in Puerto Varas, Chile.

The systematization is based on the record made by the TVA Team during the implementation of the pilot stage. The purpose is developing evidence and providing accessible and comprehensible contents for those who are interested in knowing this experience, to deepen in the work approaches that support the TVA Project, as well as to promote OT practice in these educational contexts.

The TVA Project allows eight people with intellectual disabilities the achievement of self‑determination, autonomy and independence, and social participation (TA core areas), plus the exploration of activities of their interest; the families identify necessary resources that they gradually incorporate into their daily life, thus understanding the perspective of the participants.

Even though the improvements are subtle, they show that the TVA strategy is useful and necessary. The project then became the TVA Program for young students and adults who have graduated from special schools. This program is supported by the financing award of the SENADIS (National Service of Disability) as part of the TVI program (Transit to independent life) for the implementation in 2019 and possible continuity in 2020 and 2021.

The TVA Team makes this material available, with the conviction of having been part of an innovative, relevant, challenging and, above all, necessary process to contribute towards improving the quality of life and social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities, their families, caregivers and/or significant members.
