Abstract

The review shows general aspects of Orthotics, pretending to be a contribution for occupational therapists who work in the area of ​​physical health or who are projecting in it.
The occupational therapist is recognized in work teams as an expert in the manufacture of orthoses, in different care contexts such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers and primary care facilities, among others.
This narrative review offers a conceptual approach to Orthotics, the historical duality of the conceptual nomination “orthosis or splint” and the role of occupational therapy in orthotics. In addition, classifications generated by international organizations are presented, mentioning the one that is mostly used in Chili. At the same time, biomechanical considerations to be taken into account in orthotic intervention processes are presented, which contribute to a correct selection of the device, complying with the requirements proposed by the pathology and with the anatomical conditions of the user. The second section exposes the various options for materials and accessories to be used in the manufacture of these devices. The third section points out the importance of understanding the therapeutic purpose to be fulfilled, and also how to develop a mold and mold in the body structure, as well as the indications and precautions to consider in the use of the orthosis.
