Abstract

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is a naturalistic developmental behavior intervention designed for young children with suspected or diagnosed autism, ages 12 to 48 months. It integrates existing knowledge about typical child development with behavioral teaching principles, to facilitate a similar developmental trajectory in young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. It emphasizes in shared enjoyment, reciprocity, and social motivation within a natural interaction with high levels of monitoring and systematization, to decrease the severity of autism symptoms and accelerate development in all areas of development. Through a narrative review of primary sources of the authors of the model, together with the review of updated evidence of the application of the intervention, this article aims to approach to the bases, origins, theoretical principles, teaching techniques and structure of an ESDM intervention program, as well as to the available scientific evidence that supports it and ranks it as one of the most effective early intervention models for young children with autism.
